Portugal is the first European Union country to issue the sustainability certificate for the Pilchaurdus Sardina, fished by Portuguese fleets. Portuguese canning companies bid for the certificate, awarded by the Marine Stewardship Council, as a stamp of quality for their product. Around 60,000 tons of sardines are caught annually along the Portuguese coast and sardine fisheries employ around 6,000 fishermen and over 130 vessels, according to IPIMAR, the governing fishing body.
